Best way to backup a VM? I exclude my machines folder from Time Machine backups because of the size and because the machine might be active during such backups. If I do an appliance export, could I delete my current machine and re-import from this.

Re: Best way to backup a VM? If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Oh no! Some styles failed to load. šŸ˜µ

Backing up while the VM is shut down is common sense. In fact, I don't even like to have VirtualBox open. I guess the way to be sure is to test a "restore. I take a lightly different tack. I back mine up just like I back up my physical boxes. It is fairly involved and has a rather steep learning curve though.

This backs up only the data and can compress it fairly well too. There is no real advantage other than space savings. It's just how I do it. I've also used it to resize disks and clone the OS without having to mess around much at the host level beyond just creating a new VDI. Time machine proved itself to me when I lost my boot drive to a hard mechanical failure.

I replaced it with a new drive, booted my OS X DVD, restored from the backup and an hour later to borrow from Service Pro's mottoit was like it never happened. That would also cause the same issues as physical PC : you will encounter issue if you try to restore that ghost image to a new VM, since the UUIDs are different.

I can see reactivation issues in Windows and booting issue in Linux. Your way is also a lot more overhead and downtime to perform a backup. Finally if the VM is properly maintened, I don't see where you can gain space : the VDI should be compacted regularly to keep the size as close as possible as the real data. I thought i would take the time to drop you a quick note to thank you for the fantastic support you have offered us on the community page. Also, with this. Here is a small excerpt of what they had to.Now that everything is ready to go, I'm just working out some bugs before deployment, and the one that I'm stuck on right now is getting phones to play an announcement beep when receiving a multicast page.

The paging itself seems to be working fine, both direct multicasts from the phones and by dialing the paging extension on the PBX, but I cannot figure out for the life of me how to make the phones play a tone before the page starts. I know there are a few people here who have played around with VitalPBX, and even more of you have extensive knowledge of Grandstream devices, so hopefully someone has ideas that I don't! As far as a tone being played before a page, I believe that would have to be a setting in the page group options and I don't believe it's a setting in the phone per-say.

It might be a simple Asterisk toggle you can enable, but I'm just not sure with VitalPBX and whether or not you have access to the backend or are stuck with their GUI selections only. I thought so, since the phone pumping out a tone every time a page was made would be hard on it, I would think. It's been a nice PBX to play around with, the prebuilt image runs on CentOS, and the front end is pretty user friendly, which is better for the non-linux guys here who are involved with it.

As far as I've seen, the backend is pretty wide-open for messing around in, but I haven't really had a reason to do so. I do not have an active VitalPBX instance up right.

I have installed it a few times for testing, but always deleted it again after a few days. I simply have not had enough free time to really kick the tires. So I have not dealt with page groups on it yet. Multicast or not. VitalPBX has a weird mix of modern and old tech. They also push this multi-tenant functionality. But Asterisk is not designed to handle it. Sure you can fake things with prefixes, but meh, that is what FreeSwitch is designed for.

Yeah, I've noticed that as well. I changed the defaults around on my install so that new extensions are created using pjsip, and they seem to be working perfectly fine with that setup. I also do appreciate that they regularly try and add new features, whether they're actually relevant to things or not. At least it shows some development going on. Overall, for what needs we have, it seems to be working great, and for the other guys who have to help me off and on, they find this interface easier to use than FreePBX I have that running elsewhere.

Thankfully at this point I'm not in need of multi-tenancy uses, though it is strange that they push for it so much, isn't it? When it comes down to the paging tone, it won't be a deal breaker, just something people will have to get used to not having for a while. I did, however I couldn't get the phones to auto answer the page, and since we have about 50 endpoints that need to receive pages, multicast is really my only option anyways.

Talking to the VitalPBX team, it doesn't sound like there is a page tone available, but maybe I can rig something up through the Asterisk conf files. Multicast, potentially, has nothing to do with the PBX. So what I have always done with the Yealink phones is to setup multicast directly. Yealink phones themselves play a tone when multicast picks up. I didn't see a setting to turn it off in fact.

But I've never really looked hard for it. Digium 1, Followers - Follow 91 Mentions 21 Products. Ashley Digium. Get answers from your peers along with millions of IT pros who visit Spiceworks.Return to VirtualBox on Windows Hosts.
